How long a crypto eSIM payment actually takes

Quote window, broadcast, confirmations, and QR delivery — typical timings by network for a travel eSIM checkout.

The number people expect when they buy an eSIM with crypto is either "instant" or "an hour". Neither is right. The honest answer is roughly three minutes end-to-end, which is fast enough to feel instant and slow enough to notice the ceiling fan while you wait.

Here is exactly what happens in those three minutes and where each second goes.

The four steps and their real timings

  1. 1

    Quote

You pick a plan, a country, a duration. The checkout returns a price in your chosen coin at the moment's exchange rate, and starts a countdown. That clock is not decorative — it's the rate lock, and the merchant is holding a fixed price for you against a volatile market.

Typical window: 10–15 minutes. Plenty for anything except finding a hardware wallet you last used in April.

  2. 2

    Broadcast

You paste the address into your wallet, type the amount, hit send. Between "send" and "the network has seen it" is usually under 5 seconds. This is not settlement — this is announcement.

  3. 3

    Confirmation

The network includes your transaction in a block. This is what "1 confirmation" means. Times vary by chain:

    • Solana: under 5 seconds
    • Tron: 20–60 seconds
    • Base / Polygon: 30–90 seconds
    • BNB Chain: ~3 seconds per block, one confirmation counted in seconds
    • Ethereum mainnet: 12–60 seconds for the block, plus fee-market delays if you underpaid gas
    • Bitcoin: 10–60 minutes for one confirmation — which is why we don't recommend it for a $15 purchase

For a stablecoin-priced item where the amount cannot change, one confirmation is enough. You are not defending against a $10M reorg on a $15 eSIM.

  4. 4

    Delivery

The moment we see the confirmation, the eSIM is provisioned and the QR code appears on the confirmation page and in email. Typically under 10 seconds after confirmation.

What the whole thing looks like on the clock

~30 s

Copy address, pick network, type amount

~60 s

Wallet review, sign, broadcast

~60 s

One network confirmation on a fast chain

~10 s

Provisioning + QR delivery

Total: under three minutes if nothing goes sideways. Under 90 seconds on Solana.

The blockchain is the fast part. The slow part is you, and that's fine — the quote clock has 15 minutes for a reason.

Why "instant" is a lie and "hours" is a different lie

Merchants who claim instant crypto payments are either using a custodial rail (their exchange counts your deposit as paid before it confirms, and eats the reversal risk) or lying. For low-value items on a stablecoin, the first is a fair tradeoff. For high-value items, waiting for one confirmation is not a real inconvenience.

Merchants who quote hours are either running Bitcoin end-to-end or their fulfilment queue is not automated. Neither applies to a modern stablecoin eSIM flow.

Where the actual delays hide

In practice, when a crypto eSIM purchase takes longer than three minutes, the reason is almost never the chain. It's one of these:

  • You underpaid the fee on Ethereum mainnet. Your transaction is broadcast but not being mined. It will sit in the mempool for hours until you either replace it with a higher fee or cancel it.
  • You underpaid the amount. You typed the quote but your wallet deducted the fee from it. The merchant sees $14.60 arrive against a $15 quote and cannot auto-fulfil.
  • You sent on the wrong network. The blockchain worked. The funds arrived somewhere — just not at any address the merchant controls.
  • The quote expired mid-broadcast. You started the send at 14:59 of a 15-minute quote and the confirmation landed at 15:04. Most merchants handle a small overrun gracefully, but not always.

If it has been more than 30 minutes

Something is wrong that waiting will not fix. Grab the transaction hash and open a support ticket. The whole conversation is: "sent X on network Y, hash Z, order N". Total resolution time when it's a simple underpayment is usually under an hour.

Making it faster on your side

Not much room left, honestly. The floor is about 90 seconds and the vast majority of that is you reading amounts back to yourself, which you should not skip. Two habits that help:

  • Pre-fund the wallet. If your USDT is on an exchange, the withdrawal to your wallet adds 5–30 minutes on top. Hold the balance where you'll spend it.
  • Pick the cheap network at the wallet, not just at the checkout. Some wallets default to Ethereum. Change the default once.

Where a card is faster and by how much

A card payment is usually 2–5 seconds. If speed is the only variable, use the card. Crypto's advantages sit elsewhere — no issuer between you and the merchant, no border-related declines, and no reliance on your bank's fraud model being calm. Three minutes for those three things is a fair trade.

Priced in crypto, delivered by QR

Pick a country, pay in USDT, USDC or SOL on a fast network, install the QR before you leave your desk.

Frequently asked questions

On Tron, Solana, Base, or Polygon, many payments confirm in under a minute and the QR follows right after. Slowdowns usually come from underpayment, wrong network, or waiting on a congested chain.
